Adding a motor to open roll-off roof observatory.
Part of building the observatory is making life easier through automating as much of the operations as possible. One important item to look at is the roof. How do you open and close it? How do you automate that process? Sure you can manually open the roof using a winch, cables, and pulleys. But instead,…

First time opening the roll-off roof observatory.
My builder took this video of him and his helper opening the roof of the observatory for the first time. I plan to add a motor in the future as well as automation. For now, I’ll just get some rope, pulleys, and a winch to open and close the roof with one person.

First building material delivery for new backyard roll-off roof observatory.
Today the first delivery of building materials was dropped off for my new observatory. Construction should start next week. First light at my new observatory site
Tonight the club held a public star party at my newly finished concrete pad of my observatory in construction. About 7 club members showed up, including 3 new members. We met in my field where the concrete pad was just poured about 3 weeks ago. Great time with everyone there. Night started out breezy and…

2024 Total Solar Eclipse
My mom, older brother, and I drove up to Millinocket Maine and got onsite to the town park around 11:30am or so. A few hundred people were already there. Many more came as totality came close. The town had setup a stage with loud music playing. Some vendors and food were available. Not many places…

Eclipse Fever
My eclipse plans are now set: driving north to Millinocket, ME to setup at the Veterans Memorial Park in town. A few of my astronomer friends will be there with telescopes. I am planning to bring a newly acquired SvBony 105mm refactor that I bought used recently but haven’t had a chance to use. A…

How I Built My Allsky Camera
I’ve had an interest in building an allsky camera for a few years now. The idea that you can photograph the entire night sky with long exposures and the software handles creating startrails, timelapse videos, keograms and more is amazing. It took a lot of research to figure out what software and parts to purchase.…
