Adding a motor to open roll-off roof observatory.

Part of building the observatory is making life easier through automating as much of the operations as possible. One important item to look at is the roof. How do you open and close it? How do you automate that process? Sure you can manually open the roof using a winch, cables, and pulleys. But instead, use an electric gate opener to open and close the roof.

I’m not exactly sure how much force is needed to open the roof. All I know is it took my builder and his helper to roll the roof by hand. Doing some searches on Amazon for gate openers, I came across these items. The gate kit includes up to 13.12ft of rack, but the roof needs to move a little more than that. They still additional rack kits that you can add on. They also have a WiFi module addon kit which will allow me to open the gate via an app on my phone, which may be needed if the key fobs don’t work from standing in my house. I’ll update this post once I have everything installed.
